The Grounds Maintenance Supervisor oversees and participates in the maintenance of turf and irrigation systems across City parks, public buildings, right-of-ways, drainage ditches, and recreational facilities. The position is responsible for supervising and directing grounds maintenance crews, ensuring the proper care and upkeep of all assigned areas. This role requires technical and functional supervision, initiative to address deficiencies, and an emphasis on safety and quality standards.
A Day in the Life:
Supervision and Leadership
•Lead, coordinate, and supervise crews in maintaining warm and cool-season turf grasses, irrigation systems, and pest management programs.
•Train staff in safe and effective work methods, motivate teams, and conduct performance evaluations.
•Plan and oversee the mowing and maintenance of parks, right-of-ways, and drainage ditches.
•Enforce safety procedures related to the handling and application of chemicals, equipment operation, and crew activities.
Field Operations and Turf Maintenance
•Plan, direct, and engage in the maintenance and repair of natural and synthetic turf areas, including irrigation systems.
•Monitor turf health, identify issues, and implement solutions such as proper mowing, aeration, seeding, and fertilization.
•Manage the application of herbicides, pesticides, and fertilizers, ensuring safety and compliance with environmental standards.
•Participate in a variety of landscape duties including trimming shrubs, weeding, and plant watering.
Irrigation Management
•Assess irrigation needs, develop watering schedules, and adjust automated systems or manually water areas as necessary.
•Install, troubleshoot, and repair irrigation components such as water lines, valves, and sprinkler heads to maintain system efficiency.
•Equipment Maintenance and Operation
•Operate and maintain a range of turf care equipment including mowers, aerators, tractors, and sprayers.
•Perform minor maintenance tasks such as blade sharpening, greasing, and tire repairs to keep equipment in good working condition.
Administrative Duties
•Handle administrative tasks including hiring, scheduling, recordkeeping, and purchasing.
•Contribute to budget preparation by recommending capital purchases and projects.
•Ensure accurate documentation and compliance with reporting standards.
Customer Service and Public Interaction
•Respond to public inquiries with professionalism and provide information regarding grounds maintenance activities.
•Continuously seek ways to improve operations, streamline work processes, and enhance customer service.
Seasonal and Special Duties
•Participate in snow and ice removal during winter months.
•Assist with greenhouse growing operations.
What You Will Need to be Successful:
Education: Bachelor's degree in Agronomy, Turf Management, Horticulture or a related field.
Experience: Employee is expected to have acquired the necessary information and skills to perform the job reasonably well within six months of employment.
Certifications/License: Must obtain a Kansas Commercial Pesticide Applicators License (Categories 3A, 3B, and 6) within one year of employment. Certifications in irrigation, landscaping, or horticulture are preferred. Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License with an acceptable driving record.
