Minimum Starting Rate: $20.59/hourEmployment type: Full-timeSummary: The dispatcher receives incoming emergency and non-emergency telephone calls from both the public and public safety agencies. This position dispatches Police, Fire and Emergency Medical Services field units to respond to emergencyand non-emergency calls for service over a two-way radio system. Dispatchers must maintain knowledge and understanding of public safety policies and procedures for the Emergency Communications Department, Police, Fire and EMS; maintain awareness and memory recall of locations and circumstances that pose hazards to public safety field units and the public; maintain confidentiality of information received; and must maintain all required certifications.Essential Duties and Responsibilities:- Efficiently gather, evaluate, prioritize, and document information from callers.- Process calls appropriately, including dispatching calls for service to appropriate public safety field units.- Provide information to the public and other agencies.- Maintain and monitor two-way radio communication with field Police, Fire and EMS units in emergency and non-emergency situations.- Enter, update and monitor the status of resources via the Computer Aided Dispatch System.- Document incident information.- Assist other dispatchers with overflow traffic on radio.- Research, gather, and disseminate additional information as needed for law enforcement.- Participate in continuing education and certification classes.- Update resource books and files as needed.- Confirm warrants.- Enter and remove NCIC entries.- Check officer safety.- Monitor alarms, NLETS, weather, building security cameras.- Clean work area.Competencies:Customer Focus and Public Relations: Manages difficult or emotional customer situations; Responds promptly to customer needs; Solicits customer feedback to improve service; Responds to requests for service and assistance; Meets commitments.Teamwork: Balances team and individual responsibilities; Exhibits objectivity and openness to others' views; Gives and welcomes feedback; Contributes to building a positive team spirit; Puts success of team above own interests; Able to build morale and group commitments to goals and objectives; Supports everyone's efforts to succeed.Safety: Observes safety and security procedures; Determines appropriate action beyond guidelines; Reports potentially unsafe conditions; Uses equipment and materials properly.Communication: Speaks clearly and persuasively in positive or negative situations; Listens and gets clarification; Responds well to questions; Participates in meetings. This position is subject to call out 24 hours a day, overtime, and extended hours when necessary.Required Education and/or Experience:High school education or G.E.D.; six months to twelve months related experience or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.Preferred Education and/or Experience:Associate's degree or equivalent from two year-college or technical school; or one year to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.Language Skills:Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.Mathematical Skills:Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.Reasoning Ability:Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.Computer Skills:Must possess strong computer skills that at a minimum include Microsoft Office Suite products including Word and Excel.Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:- CPR/BLS- EMD- NCIC- ICS100 and 700Physical Demands:The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
